It's not just Millennials that want smart homes anymore. Smart homes are becoming a mainstream thing. You can buy smart products most anywhere from Walmart to Macy's, and of course, online. Smart homes are definitely attractive to current home buyers and the small price to purchase and install should reap the reward in a little higher selling price, and happy customers. According the an estimate given in USA TODAY, it will cost around $2,000 to purchase and install a smart thermostat, security, doorbell, lock, and lighting. This would be a non subscription do it yourself system. If you purchase the items yourself and hire a lower cost company to install them, it shouldn't be much more than 2K .

Here are some of the items you can choose:

  • Smart lighting: Plug in a base to speak to the bulbs, then plug in the bulbs to regular sockets.  $150 and up.

  • Thermostat, which can be controlled from anywhere. $250.

  • Smart garage door opener to monitor who's coming in and out, via an app. $180

  • Security offers webcam footage, sirens and alerts. $170.

  • Video doorbell, you can also speak to the visitor through your smart phone even if you are not home. $200.

  • A smart lock, for opening the door with your phone or via Alexa, so you can open the door for your kids even if they have forgotten their key.  $200.

And then you may want an Echo or Alexa, or similar connected speaker that controls all these devices, plus plays music on demand and tells you the latest weather and news. $200

They all say you can do it yourself, but if you are like me, you will most likely need help. Using some kind of Geek Squad or lower cost company, you should be able to have a smart home for around $2,000.
